Are
you a homemaker, teacher, an artist, a physician,
an executive, or a merchant?
You don't have to be a psychologist to be called
of God to be a (Paracaleo) counselor.
How
can you tell if this is your calling? Do any of
the following apply to you?
People come to you for help
You
posses desire to help people
You
posses a desire to see people brought into a right
relationship with themselves, others and God
You posses a willingness to listen to others with
a non-critical attitude
You
believe God can help people in need
You are able to maintain confidences entrusted to
you by people who share what is closest to themselves
You believe God has a plan for your life
If
4 out of the 7 above describe you, it would be a
fair evaluation that you possess the Gift of Counseling.
Proof can only be determined by past and future
success.
DO
I HAVE TO GO TO SCHOOL TO BECOME A COUNSELOR?
DO
I NEED AN ADVANCED DEGREE TO BE AN EFFECTIVE COUNSELOR?
The
answer to both these questions are dependent upon
the level of counseling you want to do. There are
many fine counselors who have not been to school
for special studies and who do not have advanced
degrees in counseling. A specialized education or
the evidence of a degree does not guarantee your
success as a counselor. However, if you have the
gift of counseling, additional education can enhance
and sharpen your abilities to be an effective counselor.
Good
Christian counselors come from a variety of backgrounds.
Just as one does not need to be a medical doctor
to take care of and minister to a sick friend, one
does not need special schooling and an advanced
degree to listen to or pray with a friend who is
emotionally or spiritually "down." Just
as there are times when the skill of a brain surgeon
is needed in the medical world, so there are times
when the skill of a highly trained Christian psychologist
or psychiatrist is helpful to treat an emotional
and spiritual person.
Thus the answer to the above questions depends upon
the level to which you wish to develop your gift.
We urge you to prayerfully develop your counseling
skills to the greatest degree that the Holy Spirit
calls you. The world is in need of good Christian
counselors. Is that your special calling? Would
you like to be a Christian Counselor practicing:
At
home
In
your Church
In
a professional office, or agency
In
your own counseling center
As
a part time profession
Your "part" in God's plan may be counseling
others.
TCU
was established to meet the needs of Christian counselors
of all skill levels from the ministry, to the layman,
leading or working in a weekly prayer group. Both
ministries are vital. Unlike many professional organizations
that seek to exclude and monopolize, TCU has a place
for the professional, the layman and the student
seeking to develop his expertise. TCU is dedicated
to helping Christian counselors grow in their faith
as Christians and in their abilities to minister
the gif t of counseling which has been entrusted
to them.
If
a counseling practice is what you want, you do not
have to re-invent the wheel in order to establish
your practice. Many have been intimidated by state
or ecclesiastical requirements and restrictions
may have their place. However, many ministers and
qualified laymen decline to establish counseling
offices in competition with humanistic ally centered
agencies, because they are scared off by bureaucratic
red tape and imposing requirements. TCU has knowledge
and tested experience to Cut that red tape -&
reduce the requirements to manageable proportions
and in many cases eliminate or set aside the state
imposed requirements.
TCU
has developed the expertise to:
Establish
your own church body as a legal corporation
Establish
a church-related Christian counseling service
Help
you become a more effective listener and therefore
more effective counselor and minister.
Provide
individualized, external education programs for
the following degrees: B.B.S., BA., M.Div., MA.,
D.Min., Ph.D., What does TCU provide?
TCU provides professional support in the form of
literature, instruction and certification as a Christian
Clinical Counselor. TCU will provide a minister
with ordination in his calling as a counselor.
TCU can provide a qualified counselor with guidelines
to establish a Christian Counseling Center. TCU

as registration, tax exemption, education programs,
how you can collect fees for your services and how
to legally advertise your ministry.
TCU
also provides professional seminars and opportunities
for Christian Clinical counselors to exchange information
on a professional level. A newsletter is provided
to all members on a regular basis.
